Just Ingredients Berberine Complex

A three-ingredient formula pairing Berbevis berberine phytosome with Chromax chromium picolinate and organic Ceylon cinnamon, in a phytosomal carrier the company describes as gentler on digestion. Every active is named and two of the three are patented branded ingredients. The catch is the count: 30 capsules at up to two a day is between a fortnight and a month for $39.99.

What’s in it

Amounts are shown only where the manufacturer publishes them. Anything without a figure is undisclosed — and for an active ingredient, an undisclosed dose is the central problem with this category.

  • Berbevis Berberine Phytosomeamount not published

Patented berberine phytosome for enhanced bioavailability; the per-serving amount was not published on the page we captured

  • Chromax Chromium Picolinateamount not published

Branded chromium picolinate, described as supporting insulin function and sugar metabolism

  • Organic Ceylon Cinnamonamount not published

Ceylon rather than cassia cinnamon — a meaningful distinction, since cassia carries coumarin

How the manufacturer says it works

Just Ingredients describes it as supporting healthy blood sugar levels, metabolism, appetite and cravings, pairing patented Berbevis berberine with Chromax chromium and organic Ceylon cinnamon in a phytosomal delivery system for improved absorption and tolerability.

What the evidence actually supports

Naming all three actives and using branded, characterised forms of two of them is better practice than the proprietary blends common in this category. The phytosome format addresses berberine's genuine absorption problem. Specifying Ceylon rather than cassia cinnamon matters: cassia contains coumarin, which is hepatotoxic at sustained high intake, so Ceylon is the appropriate choice for daily use. Chromium picolinate has been studied for glucose metabolism, though the results are mixed and effect sizes small.

Where that evidence stops

No per-serving amounts are published for any of the three ingredients, so none of the doses can be compared against the studies behind them. Berberine works through AMPK rather than the GLP-1 receptor, so this is not a GLP-1 mechanism. Chromium's effects on body weight are not well supported — the glucose literature is more favourable than the weight literature, and both are modest. Berberine also inhibits CYP3A4 and can raise blood levels of many prescription medications. At $39.99 for 30 capsules the cost per day is high if you take two.

Strengths and problems

Problems

  • No per-serving amounts published for any ingredient
  • 30 capsules at up to two daily is as little as a fortnight for $39.99
  • Berberine is not a GLP-1 mechanism despite the category

Frequently asked

Why does Ceylon versus cassia cinnamon matter?

Cassia cinnamon — the cheaper and more common kind — contains coumarin, which can be hepatotoxic with sustained high intake. Ceylon cinnamon contains far less. For a supplement you are meant to take daily for months, specifying Ceylon is a genuine safety consideration rather than a marketing flourish, and it is worth looking for on any cinnamon-containing product.

How long does a bottle last?

Between 15 and 30 days depending on whether you take one capsule or two. At $39.99 that is roughly $1.33 to $2.67 a day, which puts it at the expensive end for a berberine product. Work out your actual daily dose before comparing it against alternatives with 60 or 120 capsules per bottle.
