LeanBox Prepared review

by LeanBox

About 40% less per meal than the category leader, with correspondingly more sodium, more repetition and worse texture. Perfectly serviceable if the alternative is takeaway; a chore if the alternative is cooking.

Tom’s verdict

LeanBox does the job cheaply and I would not talk anyone out of it if the honest alternative is ordering delivery four nights a week. But the sustainability score is the one to look at: our testers stopped wanting to eat this at around week five, and a meal service you have abandoned is worse value than an expensive one you are still using. The phone-only cancellation is a mark against them and I have deducted for it.

What we liked and what we didn’t

Strengths

  • Genuinely inexpensive for prepared food at $8.25 a meal
  • Frozen rather than refrigerated, so nothing spoils if you skip a few days
  • Calorie and macro information is accurate and clearly printed
  • Larger portions than the premium competition

Problems

  • Sodium averaged over 1,100mg per meal — high enough to matter if you are watching blood pressure
  • Menu rotation is narrow and our testers were bored by week five
  • Texture after reheating was poor on about a third of the meals
  • Cancellation requires a phone call during business hours
  • Freezer space required is more than people expect

Best for

Replacing frequent takeaway on a budget, where the realistic comparison is a $14 delivery order rather than home cooking.

Not for

Anyone managing sodium intake, or who needs variety to stay engaged past a month.

What the evidence actually shows

Same mechanism as the rest of the category — portion control improving adherence to a deficit. LeanBox makes no efficacy claims beyond calorie transparency, which is appropriate.

The sodium question

Averaging above 1,100mg per meal, three meals a day would put you near or over the recommended daily limit before you have added anything else.

For someone with normal blood pressure eating one LeanBox meal a day this is not a crisis. For anyone with hypertension it is a genuine reason to look elsewhere, and it is not flagged anywhere in the marketing.

Cancelling

You cannot cancel from the account page. You call a number, during business hours, and are routed through a retention offer before the cancellation is processed. Ours took eleven minutes.

Companies that are confident in their product let you leave easily. This is a signal, and we treat it as one in scoring.
